Check a Zambian Taxpayer Identification Number (TPIN) against ZRA records and see the registered name and status.

What is a Zambia TPIN?

A TPIN (Taxpayer Identification Number) is the unique ten-digit number the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) allocates to a taxpayer on registration — for example 1001747465 for Zambeef Products PLC. Tax types such as VAT and income tax are registered against the same TPIN, which is needed for any dealings with ZRA.

Zambia TPIN format

Ten computer-generated digits.

1001747465 Ten digits

Example: 1001747465 (Zambeef Products PLC).

  • First digit: ZRA publishes no meaning for the first digit.
  • No check digit: ZRA publishes no check-digit rule.
  • Not a TPIN: The NRC (national registration card) number and the PACRA business registration number are different numbers.
  • Privacy: Many TPINs belong to individuals, such as employees and bank-account holders. Only check a TPIN you have a business reason to check, such as a supplier’s.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many digits is a Zambia TPIN?

Ten. The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) describes the TPIN as “a unique ten-digit computer generated number allocated to a taxpayer upon registration”. It has no letters and no ZM prefix.

Can I check a TPIN against ZRA records?

Yes. Enter it in the checker on this page: it looks the TPIN up in ZRA’s records and returns the registered name and status. It does not show VAT registration, tax types or the registration date.

What does “De-registered” mean?

ZRA shows inactive records as de-registered. A TPIN found with that status should not be treated as an active taxpayer, even though the number exists.

Is the TPIN the same as a Zambia VAT number?

Zambia has no separate VAT number format: VAT is registered as a tax type on the business’s existing TPIN, alongside other tax types such as income tax.

Who needs a TPIN?

Companies, partnerships, sole traders, individuals, NGOs, clubs and associations. Employers must report every employee’s TPIN on the monthly PAYE return, and banks must collect TPINs for new accounts. Registration is free.

Does a new company get a TPIN automatically?

For resident companies registered after 2020, ZRA says the TPIN is generated as soon as registration with PACRA is complete. The PACRA business registration number is a different number from the TPIN.
