Belize TIN Format Checker

Check that a Belize Tax Identification Number has the right structure: 6 digits, or 7 with the check digit.

What is a Belize TIN?

A Belize TIN (Tax Identification Number) is the number the Belize Tax Service (BTS) issues to employees, sole proprietors, partnerships, LLPs and companies when they register. It is a 6-digit number with a check digit at the end, 7 digits in full. Registering for a TIN is what lets a business go on to register for General Sales Tax and Customs & Excise, and the TIN is printed on its General Sales Tax Certificate.

Format illustration only: 1234567 is a placeholder, not a known taxpayer’s TIN.

  • 6 or 7 digits: BTS doesn’t show taxpayers the check digit, so both lengths are normal. Digits only, no prefix.
  • Check digit: It exists, but BTS doesn’t publish the algorithm, so it isn’t tested here.
  • Not a TIN: The 9-digit BCCAR business entity number is a different number.
  • Format check only: This checker confirms the structure. Many TINs belong to individuals, so never enter or share another person’s TIN.

How to check a Belize TIN

  1. 1 Find the TIN on the supplier’s General Sales Tax Certificate or Business Tax Certificate.
  2. 2 Enter the 6 or 7 digits above. The checker confirms the structure; it cannot confirm that the TIN was issued.
  3. 3 If the supplier has recently changed its legal form, ask for its current TIN.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many digits is a Belize TIN?

The Belize Tax Service (BTS) generates a 6-digit number and adds a check digit at the end, making 7 digits in full. BTS says the check digit is not visible to the taxpayer, so the TIN you are given may have 6 digits. This checker accepts both.

Is the Belize GST number the same as the TIN?

A GST-registered business is identified by its TIN, which is printed on its General Sales Tax Certificate. Registering for a TIN is what lets a business go on to register for General Sales Tax and Customs & Excise.

Can the check digit be verified?

No. BTS confirms that the TIN ends in a check digit but does not publish how it is calculated, so this checker does not test it.

Can a Belize TIN change?

An individual’s TIN does not change. A business gets a new TIN when its structure changes — for example when a sole proprietor becomes a limited liability company — so a TIN on file for a supplier that has restructured may be out of date.

Is the 9-digit BCCAR number a TIN?

No. The Belize Companies and Corporate Affairs Registry (BCCAR) gives companies, LLPs and business names a 9-digit business entity number on their e-certificate. The TIN is a separate number issued by BTS.

Is there a public Belize TIN lookup?

No. BTS lists no online TIN-verification tool. For a business, the TIN is shown on its General Sales Tax Certificate and Business Tax Certificate.
